Spring Has Sprung

It’s early February here in Florida. Someone forgot to mention that to the wildlife and flowers. Today the birds are buzzing about with playful flights, weaving in and out like a kite. The flowers, the few we have, are in full bloom. We have started our seedlings and started tilling the garden. What signs do I really know Spring is here?
Our Pileated Woodpeckers return.

Pileated Woodpecker

Each year we look forward to their return. The pair brings us beautiful pleasure in watching them. They don’t just peck, they pluck off the bark of the trees in search of bugs. The wood chips fly off around your head as you are watching them.. They are quite amusing. Pileated Woodpeckers are monogamous, they stay with one mate for life. The Pileated Woodpecker averages about 16-19 inches tall. The cartoon character Woody Woodpecker was modeled after the Pileated Woodpecker. I remember the first time I saw them on our property, I jumped up and thought I just saw Woody himself. I could spend the afternoon watching them.

We have two other woodpecker species on our 2 acres. We frequently see the most common here in Florida, the Red-bellied Woodpecker and often see our smallest woodpecker, the Downey Woodpecker. We also have Robins, Blue Birds, Cardinals, different kinds of Owls and various finches.

I once was blessed enough the catch a Painted Bunting at my feeder.

We even had a dove!
We think she was resting for the night.

We don’t have many flowers on our property, the heat takes care of that. I do have a few Azaleas bushes and they certainly think it is Spring.

As you can see, here at Our Cabin in the Woods,
Spring has Sprung!
Peace, Love and Enjoy
