Promise Breakers

As I was sitting in church, our sermon was on "Covenant Keepers-Losers Weepers", it was a reminder that we as a society are nothing but a bunch of promise breakers. Church looks no different than the world. Of course there are good hearted people in church who do their best to serve God. There are also good hearted people of the world who do their best to be good hearted people.

Our church service was also baby dedication Sunday. I always love oooing and aaaing over those sweet little faces. I watched as the parents vow to raise them in God’s word. I also watched as friends and family vowed the same and then our Pastor asked us church members to make the same vow.
I couldn’t help then to think of all of the kids that are teens, college age too. They drift away from church, parents let them “have their space” everyone else sits back and watches it all unfold. But everyone is saying what happened, where did they go wrong? THEY did not go wrong, WE went wrong, WE broke our promises to THEM. Everyone  is waiting for someone else, to do or say something. No one wants to take responsibility.
I can say the same with marriage. We plan for months, sometimes years for the wedding. We have showers and parties. Everyone brings gifts and shows support. The wedding was beautiful, we all watch as the happy couple makes PROMISES to one another, for sickness and health, for better or for worse, for richer or poorer, til DEATH do us part. We applaud, congratulate, toast and then go on about our lives. Then when that couple breaks their promises to each other, we support the person as they go through a divorce, sometimes dragging children down a path that we all vowed to not let happen.
Then we watch again, sometimes 3, 4 or 5 times, the same “friends” make promises that chances are they are going to break? What kind of “friend” are we to allow this pattern to keep going?
What happens when Jack’s dad stands before the church and vows to raise him in a Christian Home with Christian values but a year later dad sleeps in every Sunday morning and leaves that responsibility to his wife and the congregation? Where is the family that promised to make sure this happened, where is the congregation that made these promises?
Why has it been okay to be a bunch of promise breakers? Why are we afraid to stand up to the truth of the promise? Why are we afraid to stand up for God’s Word?
Proverbs 25:14 says “Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.
Proverbs 19:5 says “A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape.
Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 further tells us “When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
Proverbs 25:14 says “Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.
Numbers 30:2 make a clear statement in saying “If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
You are not just breaking your promises to those you gave them to, you are breaking your promises to Him who gave you Life!
Then why are we surprised when things don’t go our way, when our children land into trouble, when you wake up one morning and realize you do not know the person you are lying next to?
Stop the generation of Promise Breakers, show your spouse, your children, your friends, the world but most importantly God what a Promise Keeper is!!! It is NEVER too late to make good on your promises, NEVER!
